This week at a glance
On the content assessed so far, Amara is performing at Grade 7 level, just below the Grade 8 target, and the latest mock (Grade 7, 69%) supports this. Main focus next week: circle theorems.
What we did this week
Two sessions on circle theorems, plus twenty minutes marking her April paper together. She can state the alternate segment theorem and recognise a cyclic quadrilateral; choosing which theorem a diagram calls for is the slow part, so we worked backwards from diagrams rather than forwards from rules.
What went well
Vectors moved from average to strong across four spec points — the difficulty had been the column notation rather than the geometry, and once that was fixed the rest followed quickly.
What to work on this week
Units. Six of the marks lost on the April paper were unit errors on correct method, and the same pattern appeared in March. It is the cheapest grade in her file to recover: the mathematics is already right.
Our plan for next week
In our lessons we’ll finish circle theorems and start on the order she attempts a paper in, since she ran out of time on the last two questions in April.
Homework: June 2023 Paper 1, Q17–20, with full working shown — rule named, then applied. We’ll report back on how Amara did next week.

Circle theorems — alternate segment and cyclic quadrilaterals. She can state both now, but picking which one applies is still slow, so we worked backwards from the diagram instead of from the rule. Two of the four exam questions came out unaided by the end. Homework: June 2023 Paper 1, Q17–20.

Finished vectors and started circle theorems. Vectors were better than expected — the column notation had been the problem, not the geometry. Marked her paper from last week together: she lost six marks to unit errors rather than method, which is the pattern from March again.

Past paper under timed conditions, 69%. Strong on number and algebra throughout. She ran out of time on the last two questions, so next week we practise the order she attempts them in rather than any new content.
